Police contacted a "person of interest" who used LinkedIn and had been in touch with Missy. The communication began in January 2016 and continued until she died. The messages began in a casual manner but"ultimately turned flirtatious and familiar." Police had to establish who the person was on the footage. The person in the footage appeared to also have a pry bar and at one point, they were holding a white rectangular box.

Investigators focused on flirtatious messages sent and received by Missy Bevers' LinkedIn account and got warrants for records from multiple cell phones connected to the couple, their friends and family. A bloody shirt, brought to the dry cleaners by Bevers' father-in-law, was tested by police, but the blood was verified to have come from a dog, just as the father-in-law said it had.
